Chapter 15

Yvonne and Charles walked into the diner, which was bustling with customers enjoying an early lunch.

But there were two customers in particular that Yvonne and Charles had come to talk to.

Jimmy Bones was playing a game of pinball in the back. He had a scowl on his face as his fingers tapped the buttons. He let out a growl as he hit the top of the machine in frustration.

“He doesn’t seem too friendly,” Yvonne commented. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay?”

Charles nodded, even though he felt nervous. He’d never been around a criminal before. But he was in a public place. Yvonne would be close, as would Mimi, the waitress. The police station was only a few blocks away. Everything was going to be fine, he told himself.

Plus this was his moment to help the Mystery Club and Owen. He knew Doris felt she had something to prove, being the youngest of the group, but so did Charles. Most people saw him as a jock. Sometimes teachers even underestimated him. He struggled in a couple of classes, but he was more than somebody who could run and throw a ball. That was why he always looked forward to his talks at lunch with Ben after a new episode of The Adventures of Detective Grant on the radio. His mind loved putting together all the clues. That was why he was so honored when his best friend—the nephew of the great Owen Quinn—wanted him to be part of a mystery club.

There was no way Charles was going to chicken out now. He had to remain cool. He took the comb from his back pocket and ran it through his hair as he studied Jimmy Bones.

He could do this.

Charles’s gaze shifted to Genevieve Marcus in a booth in the corner. She was dressed in a smart black-and-white business suit with giant pearl earrings. She had turned the big corner booth into her own private office, with file folders neatly stacked and a row of pens lined up beside a giant yellow notepad. Genevieve signed a file, then shoved it back to an assistant, who quickly hurried off, a panicked look in her eyes.

“Have to admit your suspect doesn’t look that friendly, either,” Charles commented.

Yvonne gulped.

This wasn’t just a big moment for Charles. Each member of the Mystery Club was going to question a suspect in a major case. Charles knew how important it was for them to get this right.

“Good luck.” Charles tried to keep his voice even. He couldn’t let anybody know he was nervous. He was a cool cat.

A cool cat who was on his way to question a convicted criminal.

“You too.” Yvonne called out as Charles headed to the back of the diner.

The lights of the pinball machine flashed as Jimmy Bones pulled the plunger to start a new game. His eyes focused as he worked the buttons to keep the silver ball bouncing between the different levers. Charles stood nearby, watching silently. He needed to find a way to get Jimmy to start talking.
